It looks like the soccer field maintained the name ashewa meda for very long time for sure up until 1991 (European calendar). Until then, there used to an all-day soccer matches on Saturdays. Eventually some sort of construction began on it. On the other part of the compound there was driving education with baby fiats and bowling pins. On the tilled ring, bicycle rentals. However on my recent visit (2004 European calendar) I have found the place to have been turned to kebele park with some cottages, table tennis, pool table, big screen tv, refreshment bar and restaurant as well two tennis courts. There was an attempt to clean up the swimming pool and bring it to operation however, it does not maintain the water from seepage.
Lots of memories in that compound.

Look whom General Wingate has produced:
Meles Zenawi was born on 8th May 1955 at Adwa in Northern Ethiopia. He received elementary education at Queen Sheba Junior Secondary School and completed High School in 1972 at """"""General Wingate School in Addis Ababa."""""" He then joined the Medical Faculty of Addis Ababa University where he studied for two years.
Need I say more?
One of the top high schools in Ethiopia and probably the best campus (too bad its old now). I wanted to goto Wingate so bad after 8th grade but I was placed Medish. I like both schools.

HISTORY OF MEDHANE ALEM H. S.- "ከዚህ ክማይሞተው የስው ልጅ ማደሪያ ስፍራ ይግቡ!"
The Early Development -- 1923 to 1954 EC.
by: Ato Dagnaw Gebru
A year following his coronation in 1923 Ethiopian Calendar (EC), His imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I founded Medhane Alem School, situated in the north western part of Addis Ababa. It was the fourth modern school after Menilik, Teferi Makonnen and Empress Mennen School for Girls. It opened its doors as boarding school, significantly on Emperor's first coronation anniversary, on Tikimt 27 1924 EC (October 17 1931) for 85 orphans to pursue academic and vocational training mainly in shoe making and furniture production. The then famous architect, Lig Haile mariam Gezmu, was named the principal of the school. There were five Ethiopian, four French teachers and a large contingent of auxiliary staff

I only went 9th grade there but Medish was a place of hang outs to watch local Kebelle soccer matches or other events in the auditorium. Does anyone remember Gebsemaw? he was school master I think. My other favorite school is General Wingate. I hope both schools will go thru renovation to restore the old glory for the new generation.

When ever I visit Addis, and wanted to just be alone and chill....there is not spot like Ghion. The Olympic size pull (specially after the water is replenished is clear before the greenish chlorine)is nice. The fact that the water is cold, unlike Hilton, it rejuvenates unless it happen to be keremt and raining (in that case Hilton is better). Another spot I enjoy the most is the cottage veranda with long long very long trees near by, birds, the fresh air and the faint sound of people and cars near by....that's as good as it gets. I always think about those who were enjoying the very place I am who are no longer with us...and also the glorious days when Haile Selassie makes a journey from palace to Ghion thru the back door. I can't wait to come back for more enjoyment of lazy days at Ghion. I am yet to dare and attempt to dive from plat form but one day....
