Merkato is not one of the biggest markets in Africa. Merkato "IS" the biggest market in the whole of the African continent. Merkato is also one of the biggest players in the national economy, which is why looters and arsonists get shot by the police. Apart from fruit, vegetables, hhousehold goods, clothing, gabbis, coffee, tyres, cloth, shoes etc. etc. Merkato is also an excellent place to shop for gold and silver. However, if you want gold / silver it is less packed and much safer to go to Piazza where the prices are just as competitive (and you can buy 200 cigarettes for less than 200 Birr LOL). When visiting Merkato it is wise to go in a group and have somebody with nothing valuable walking behind to protect the group from thieves. It's a great place and a great experience to see it.
